Who We Are

The Minstrel Players have been around as a Long Island Theatrical Troupe since early 2000. The original concept of The Minstrel Players was developed by Executive Producer Ray Palen and his sister Tara. Ray and Tara have a lifetime of performance experience and Ray and his wife and Co-Producer, Debbie, sat on the board of a popular theatre group in Queens before starting their own venture.

The Minstrel Players mission is to provide "World Class" entertainment at an affordable price. Above and beyond that, The Minstrel Players seek to work with other actors and theatre professionals who share the same love of the craft that they have. This includes buying into the concept of "checking your ego at the door" - an ideology that has worked well for this tight-knit group. We truly believe that putting together the right chemistry of individuals makes for a better performance in every way!

In addition to those already mentioned, the backbone of The Minstrel Players include: Rob Cashman - our brilliant Technical Director, and Bernie Caprera - one of the top Lighting Directors on Long Island. Also, one of our proudest achievements has been the development of our young Stage Manager, Esteban Lopez, who has quickly risen from Crew Member to one of the best all-around people the Minstrels have ever had off-stage. We also are eternally grateful to the late Nicky Star - our personal videographer for years and creator of many of our signature props and set pieces - his legacy lives on the Minstrel Stage!

The Minstrel Players on-stage talent is made up of a mix of regulars and newcomers. We apply an "open-door" policy to all who want to be a part of our productions and encourage new talent/backstage help to join us. Some key members who have contributed to The Minstrel Players success in this capacity are: Karen Mercorella - the on-stage backbone of several Minstrel productions; Roseann Baldanza - an original Minstrel and frequent actor; and many, many other hard-working and wonderfully talented actors who are too numerous to list individually.

Some Minstrels have gone above and beyond in way of creativity, extra effort or pure talent. The Minstrels recognize them by induction into The Minstrel Players Hall of Fame

Some beloved Minstrels have passed away. The Minstrels recognize their contributions in The Minstrel Players In Memorium.

We enjoy what we do and hope it shows in each and every performance. Please come and see a Minstrel Players production and find out what we're all about! Enjoy!

Ray Palen (Scrooge): Ray is privileged to be playing the legendary and iconic Ebenezer Scrooge for the 9th time in this terrific production. He was last seen on stage portraying William Gillette/Sherlock Holmes in the critically acclaimed "THE GAME'S AFOOT".  Ray loves playing famous characters as the challenge is to take familiar roles and making them his own. Others may portray Ebenezer Scrooge --- Ray 'becomes' him! Mr. Ray is especially thrilled about the latest venture of the Minstrels --- their learning arm --- Minstrel Academy --- where he instructs most of the courses. It is an outstanding way to pay it forward and work with some great like-minded individuals who are true students of the acting craft and seeking to keep their skills sharp. Ray himself was blessed to have attended The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC where he was trained by a number of supremely talented individuals that included current TV star, Brian Markinson, and Oscar-winner, the late Jennifer Jones. He also received private vocal lessons from Tony winner, Ron Raines, and was personally coached by the late stage/screen legend, Allan Jones. Ray has performed in hundreds of productions since childhood and has a soft spot for mystery/thrillers. His inspirations for "THE GAME'S AFOOT" include, of course, William Gillette as well as the indomitable figure of Sherlock Holmes. Ray remains steadfast in his goals: working for Walt Disney World, playing CF for OUR New York Yankees and being named the first American Dr. Who. Break a leg to the enormously talented Cast and Crew and all my love to Debbie and (the littlest Minstrel) Princess Anna. Happy Holidays and enjoy!

Lou Lentino: Lou has known he wanted to be an actor since the age of three with his first play in second grade and first leading role at age twelve. After high school, he hit the streets of NYC trying to get work. This was no easy task but the journey was exciting as well as educational. Since 1989, he has appeared in over a hundred productions spanning theatre, film and television. However he believes that nothing comes close to the electricity of a live theatre performance. Eventually the inevitable happened - he and a couple friends started a production company, Crawlspace Films. They have been producing films for five years, three of which have won awards and a finalist in the "I love NY" short film competition. Lou prides himself on being professional, dedicated and hard working.
